Welcome to the WSARE Colorado Queen Honey Bee Testing Project for Increased Sustainability.

Beekeepers across the US as well as Colorado face many challenges to their apiaries from the current pests and diseases.   The most challenging pest today involves varroa destructor, the varroa mite.  Without treatments, many Colorado beekeepers face increased colony losses through additional virus’s vectored through the varroa mites feeding off the capped larva within the bee colonies.

This project will focus on bringing to Colorado beekeepers, additional resistant honey bee stock that possesses the Varroa Sensitive Hygiene genetics, or VSH.

The three Colorado Producers for this project include, Kris Holthaus from Ft. Collins, CO, Dean Chapla, from Longmont, CO, and Janet Fink, from Walsenburg, CO.

Working as our Professional Advisor, is Liz Huxter, of Kettle Valley Queens, from Grand Forks, British Columbia.  As project manager in testing, evaluating and propagating resistant queen stock through many of the BC Bee Breeders Association’s projects, we are extremely fortunate to have her level of experience, knowledge, and commitment in assisting us in this project.
